Paardenkliniek Wolvega is a leading equine sport medicine hospital serving clients from across the Netherlands and internationally. We are widely recognised as the primary referral equine clinic in our region.

Our team includes several highly qualified equine veterinarians, including two European Specialists in Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM), a European Specialist in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ECVSMR), an EVCS Diplomate Surgeon, a certified ISELP member, and multiple certified pre-purchase examination veterinarians.

Within our hospital, we offer extensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal, cardiac, respiratory, and orthopedic conditions. Communication is at the heart of our approach: listening carefully to owners and evaluating each horse thoroughly, followed by communicating findings, treatment options, rehabilitation.

Our experienced orthopaedic team works both in the hospital and ambulatory. In our equine hospital, there’s access to state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, including MRI and CT.

About the fellowship

Are you an equine veterinarian looking to further specialise in equine orthopedics?

To support the continued growth of our orthopedic department, which currently consists of eight experienced orthopedic veterinarians, we are offering a Fellowship in Equine Orthopedics for an ambitious and motivated veterinarian.

The fellowship lasts 12–18 months and is designed to develop you into an independent equine orthopedic veterinarian, with the intention of creating a long-term role within our team.

We are looking for an early-career/new grad veterinarian with a strong motivation to develop within equine sports medicine. You are energetic, communicative, and take responsibility for both patient care and your own professional development. In addition, you have the ambition and interpersonal skills required to build your own professional network within the equine industry during the fellowship.

What Does the Fellowship Involve?

From day one, you will be actively involved in orthopedic examinations and treatments. You will work independently where appropriate and always under the guidance of our experienced orthopedic team. Your level of responsibility and autonomy will grow as your skills and experience develop.

During the fellowship you will:

Complete a six-week introductory rotation through the Internal Medicine and Surgery departments, enabling participation in the junior on-call rota.
Perform orthopaedic work from the start, including lameness examinations, follow-up treatments, and diagnostic imaging using radiography and ultrasonography.
Manage outpatient cases and maintain close communication with orthopedic clinicians, surgeons, and horse owners.
Learn to work with MRI and CT imaging and develop skills in image interpretation.
Assist experienced orthopedic veterinarians both within the hospital and during ambulatory visits to clients.

In addition to extensive practical training, we actively invest in your professional development through:

Monthly case discussions with your mentor.
Individual coaching focused on both clinical and professional growth.
Participation in at least one ISELP module, selected in consultation with your mentor.
A stimulating learning environment with direct access to experienced specialists and advanced diagnostic facilities.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a qualified veterinarian with an interest in equine orthopedics. Previous work experience is welcome but not required.

You are:

Willing to invest significantly in your development as an orthopedic veterinarian.

In addition, you have:

A veterinary degree with a focus on Equine Medicine.
Demonstrable interest in equine orthopedics.
Affinity with equestrian sports; experience or an established network within a specific discipline is considered an advantage
