Guidance from heat till birth
There are many factors to consider when breeding a foal. The type of semen (fresh, refrigerated, frozen or natural mating) determines the course of the process, whereby the optimal moment of insemination is determined with the help of ultrasound, among other things.
In addition, preconditions, such as the health of the uterus, are examined and if necessary they are responded to. Depending on your preference, the guidance can take place at our clinic or at your home.
Modern Reprodution
At Paardenkliniek Wolvega there are many possibilities in the field of reproduction and fertility. In addition to the usual mare management, we offer the following services:
- Insemination with frozen semen
- Stallionstation: semen collection and examination
- Embryo transfer
- Diagnosis and treatment of infertile mares
Mare management at your place or at the clinic
Our ambulatory veterinarians are responsible for the gynecological supervision of your mare at home. Preconditions, such as the health of the uterus prior to breeding, are assessed and treated as necessary. Using ultrasound, palpation and uterine sampling among other things, your vet can determine the optimal moment for insemination.
We always try to ensure the same veterinarian supervises your mare to provide continuity in her case.
If your mare requires an early morning ultrasound examination to order semen, please make an appointment the day before so that this can be planned properly.
Embryo transfer
With embryo transfer (ET) an embryo from a ‘donor’ mare is transferred into the uterus of a surrogate mare, the ‘recipient’.
The ‘surrogate’ will then carry the foal to full term, and raise them until fully weaned.
Why should I choose ET?
People choose to perform embryo transfer for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, the mare not being able or well enough to carry a foal through full gestation, the mare being in active competition or desiring multiple foals from the mare in a single breeding season.

Onze bejaarde pony Jacob is geholpen aan eorth. We zijn vooraf goed geïnformeerd over de behandeling en kansen op herstel, ook gewezen op de risico's van de ingreep. Onze pony is als een prins behandeld en uitstekend verzorgd. De dierenarts hield ons goed op de hoogte. Gelukkig verloopt het herstel van Jacob voorspoedig. Dikke prima voor deze kliniek
Zeer fijne kliniek. Gaan rustig en deskundig om met mijn paarden. En nemen de tijd de vragen te beantwoorden.
Er word goed naar je uitleg geluisterd, keelscopie en balspoeling op schijf thuisgestuurd gekregen. Uit de scopie op de dag zelf bleek al: pony retour met gierende banden! Aantal dagen later keurig gebeld met labuitslagen, hele goede uitleg van Berit + advies ab bacteriele infectie vd verkopende partij. Ik kocht een gekeurde pony, maar een kliniek is mi toch iets anders dan een DAP. (De goede DAP's niet te na gesproken) 😉.
