Orthopedics
Examination and treatment of the musculoskeletal system
What is orthopedics
Orthopedics is the specialty that focuses on the musculoskeletal system of horses. Discomfort due to an injury can manifest itself, among other things, through stiffness or lameness during movement. Our veterinarians are specialized in finding out the cause of orthopedic problems.
Another important task in this field is the management of sport horses. There is an intensive follow-up on a regular basis where management and training are adjusted based on performance, but especially the needs and health of the individual horse in question. This management not only requires knowledge about the musculoskeletal system, but also about the well-being, the intestinal system, the respiratory system, the nutrition and training schedule and the right batter. This aspect requires good cooperation with the riders, the farrier, but also our specialists of internal diseases.
All these examinations can be performed both on location at home and at the clinic. The sports medical center is located at the clinic and is equipped with all (indoor) facilities such as a lameness track, hard and soft circle and an indoor riding arena. In addition, all imaging equipment is also present and, if applicable, treatment can be started immediately.
What does an orthopedic examination look like?
When there is a suspected orthopedic problem of the horse, an appointment will be made with one of our orthopedic specialists. The vet will discuss the situation with the owner and/or trainer of the horse and then start the investigation. It goes through the following phases in consultation with the owner:
- Clinical examination: the horse is extensively examined in hand and possibly under the saddle
- Local Anesthetization: with the use of local anesthetic, local numbing of a joint, tendon or ligament, it is determined where an orthopedic problem is located.
- Medical Imaging: making a diagnosis is done by taking X-rays, making an ultrasound possibly supplemented with an MRI or CT scan
- Treatment: an extensive range of treatment options are possible with the specialists of Paardenkliniek Wolvega. To choose the right treatment, it is essential to make a good diagnosis.
- Treatment plan/follow-up procedure: in collaboration with the owner, rider and/or trainer, a follow-up plan is made to come to a good rehabilitation.
Medical imaging possibilities at our clinic
Medical Imaging can be used both for diagnosing a lameness test, but also for the guidance and follow-up of sport horses. In addition, it is of course often used for carrying out a purchase or sales inspection.
We have high quality x-rays and ultrasound both at our clinic and on location. In addition, we have access to an MRI scan at Paardenkliniek Wolvega. An even more accurate diagnosis can be made by use of a MRI scan.

Beoordelingen
Happy horses, happy people
