Surgery
The best for your horse
Experienced team
In the surgery department, horses are examined and treated that need to go through surgery. Every day, approximately four to six surgeries are performed. During the entire process, a team of very experienced assistants, interns and veterinarians is on hand to provide the best possible care to your horse.
Anesthesia
Before the horse is put under general anesthesia, the horse is completely checked to estimate the risk of complications. A complete pre-anesthetic examination is performed. The examination examines the following organ systems:
- Auscultation of heart and lungs
- Check of body temperature
- General impression
- Correct vaccination and deworming management
Arthroscopy- a minimally invasive view into the equine joint
Arthroscopy is a very useful procedure to perform minimally invasive joint surgeries. Almost every day, our surgeons remove ‘OCD’ or bone fragments from various joints for various reasons. Arthroscopy could also be used to treat infected joints, such as those in foals with septic arthritis. The joints are in these cases are thoroughly examined, flushed and debrided. Keyhole surgery can be performed at relevant bursa or tendon sheaths. In addition, decompression of the involved structures may be supplemented with regenerative therapy.
Bone fractures
In addition to the common coffin bone fractures and the frequently operated graft bone fractures, bone fracture operations (osteosynthesis) use plates and screws that are precisely placed using X-rays. Depending on the condition and localization, the leg is bandaged or cast immediately after the surgery.
Emergency Surgery
At Equine Clinic Wolvega we have all the facilities to perform all kinds of emergency surgeries. Position changes and intestinal obstructions are common causes of colic in the horse. We can remedy this through abdominal surgery. We can also perform caesarean sections using technology.
Standing (keyhole) Surgery
In addition to the regular surgeries under general anesthesia, the clinic also has a standing surgery room. In this, surgeries are performed on the standing sedated horse. Examples where this procedure is usefull are for example the removal of tumors and surgical procedures on the head (sinus trepanations). We also have a lot of experience in performing laparascopy, which is keyhole surgery of the abdomen. Given the large gastrointestinal tract of the horse, certain procedures can only be performed standing up. Examples include laparoscopic closure of the nefrosplenic ligament and castration of mares.
Throat and upper airway surgery
Upper airway surgery is sometimes required to optimise the function of the equine athlete. Depending on the condition, there are a wide range of options. These include “tie-back surgery” for laryngeal paralysis, in which airflow is improved by tightening one of the cartilages in the throat. In certain cases, we are also able to perform some of these procedures in the standing horse.
Beoordelingen
Happy horses, happy people
